Hand Stitched Quilt 101

What is a quilt ?

Quilts are the biggest pieces of art most people can put in their bedrooms. Quilting involves simply running stitches to anchor a soft filler between two layers of fabric. These stitches traditionally follow a systematic pattern to create a subtle textured fabric surface. The top fabric layer of a quilt is normally a patchwork and a fine quality quilt includes appliqués. Part of the challenge of designing a quilt is the melding of the design of the patchwork and appliqués with the pattern of quilting stitches.

Hand stitched quilt vs. machine made quilt?

Our hand stitched quilts are unique in that quilting stitches and appliquéing stitches are all sewn by hand. It usually takes 400 - 500 hours to make such a fine quality hand stitched quilt, therefore most quilters can make only a couple of quilts per year. These quilts are usually one of a kind, although a quilter sometimes makes a couple more of the same design with the same fabrics. At HandStitchedQuilt.com, we do not offer machine made quilts.

The quality of hand stitched quilts?

Not even hand stitched quilts that are available on the market are of the same quality. We believe this is mostly due to the fact that the demand for quilts is far greater than what can be met by the diminishing number of experienced quilt-makers. A great hand stitched quilt has the following quality:

(i) Has striking and well-coordinated colors and it lies flat and not crooked.


Fine Quality	Looks-Like

(ii) Has appliqués. Appliqué stitches are hidden, fine, and with great precision, thus only experienced quilters can make appliqué quilts.

(iii) Quilted abundantly, evenly, and with small stitches.

(iv) Patchwork pieces are in alignment after sewn together.

Are hand stitched quilts only decorative?

No. Quilts from HandStitchedQuilt.com are intended to be used as bedcovers. After all what good are they if you can't use these bed quilts. The quilts are made of good fabrics and most of them may be washed. They will last a lifetime if you take care of them.
