Hand Stitched Quilt 101 What is a quilt ?Quilts are the biggest pieces of art most people can put in their bedrooms. Quilting involves simply running stitches to anchor a soft filler between two layers of fabric. These stitches traditionally follow a systematic pattern to create a subtle textured fabric surface. The top fabric layer of a quilt is normally a patchwork and a fine quality quilt includes appliqués. Part of the challenge of designing a quilt is the melding of the design of the patchwork and appliqués with the pattern of quilting stitches. It usually takes 400 - 500 hours to make such a fine quality hand stitched quilt, therefore most quilters can make only a couple of quilts per year.
